Causation and Constitution in System Dynamics: Modelling a Socially Constituted World

چکیده

This paper discusses the claim that System Dynamics models are unable to represent constitutional change. They do represent state transitions, but not constitutional transitions. Because the latter kind of transitions is the rule rather than the exception in the study of social phenomena, this inability has serious consequences. First of all, it leads to a neglect of constitutional issues; causal models blind us for constitutional change. Secondly, and even more seriously, it implies a direct threat to the validity of the causal models, themselves. These consequences are discussed and illustrated by referring to two case studies. Finally, the question is discussed of whether Group Model Building handles constitutional issues any better than System Dynamics does. Although Group Model Building does contribute important epistemological insights, it fails, just as is the case in System Dynamics, to deal with constitutional change. Mechanical System Modelling of Robot Dynamics Using a Mass/Pulley Model

The well-known electro-mechanical analogy that equates current, voltage, resistance, inductance and capacitance to force, velocity, damping, spring constant and mass has a shortcoming in that mass can only be used to simulate a capacitor which has one terminal connected to ground. A new model that was previously proposed by the authors that combines a mass with a pulley (MP) is shown to simulat...

Modelling the Dynamics of Human Resources Capacity in Health Care Services A Case Study of Khatam-al-Anbia Hospital of Mashhad

Background: In service organizations such as hospitals, human resources (HR) play a key role in the quality of service delivery. Lack of a systemic attitude in terms of system dynamics, HR planning have been somewhat distant from reality. In order to solve such a problem, this study aimed to modeling the dynamics of human resources capacity management system in healthcare services.   Material...

Coincidence as Overlap

Material constitution and coincidence are widely discussed but poorly understood. This paper is an attempt to make progress by developing an account of how numerically distinct material objects coincide when one constitutes the other. I address two central issues: first, do material coincidents share their proper spatiotemporal parts, and if so, do they share all of them? Second, how can materi...

Causation , Physics , and the Constitution of Reality : Russell ’ s

This is an outstanding anthology. It contains extended reflections on Russell’s idea that our notion of causation is a relic of stone-age metaphysics, which fails to fit contemporary physics and thus deserves elimination (‘On the Notion of Cause’, Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society, 13, 1913, pp. 1–26). It will be of interest to anyone interested in causation or the physical image of the w...
